The 2023 SpyCloud Ransomware Defense Report
- Trends relating to ransomware attack frequency and financial impact
- Common entry points for attacks, including malware-exfiltrated authentication data
- Most-used countermeasures
- Gaps in prevention and defensive measures
You’ll also get access to new research that shows how certain infostealer malware infections are precursors to future ransomware events.
RANSOMWARE REMAINS WIDESPREAD
Attacks continue to impact the majority of organizations, with 81% reporting being affected at least once in the past 12 months.
AND THE COST IS CLIMBING
Almost 40% of organizations who paid a ransom spent at least $1 million in cumulative costs, and the rest reported feeling a significant hit to their operations and resources.
TEAMS REMAIN MOST CONCERNED ABOUT HUMAN-DRIVEN RISKS
Phishing and social engineering, along with unpatched vulnerabilities, once again ranked as the riskiest entry points for ransomware – but security teams are switching up how they tackle these problems.
AND COUNTERMEASURES ARE LAGGING AS CRIMINALS CHANGE TACTICS
Year over year, data backup has remained the most important countermeasure for organizations – but this practice doesn’t mitigate the entry points for modern ransomware, which capitalize on malware-exfiltrated data including authentication cookies.
SURVEY SAYS: LOOK DEEPER AT YOUR MALWARE PROBLEM
We found that ransomware prevention is consistently at the top of the priority list for organizations. But most aren’t prioritizing the remediation of authentication data siphoned by infostealer malware. This is a big problem, since our analysis shows nearly one-third of companies who experienced a ransomware event had at least one infostealer infection before being attacked.
