Malware Madness: Top Identity Exposure Trends from the Criminal Underground
At SpyCloud, we believe that understanding identity exposure trends is essential for protecting both organizations and consumers from cybercrime. Each year, our team of researchers analyze data from the deepest layers of the darknet to uncover insights into how exposed data puts individuals and businesses at risk of data breaches, account takeover, ransomware attacks, and online fraud.
Our research shows an increasing reliance on infostealer malware to acquire vast quantities of fresh authentication data and PII directly from user’s devices, enabling impersonation with valid credentials and session cookies that leads to opportunities for costly follow-on attacks.

SpyCloud’s VP of Product Management, Chip Witt and Director of Security Research, Trevor Hilligoss, pull back the curtain and outline actionable steps that enterprises can take to protect themselves and their consumers from the latest criminal tactics. They cover:
- The proliferation of infostealers to siphon fresh, accurate authentication information (nearly half of the exposed credentials we recaptured from the criminal underground in 2022 were exfiltrated from malware-infected devices)
- How session cookies give cybercriminals unfettered access to your network by enabling MFA bypass
- Popular passwords influenced by the year’s most talked about people and events
- What security leaders & practitioners can do to disrupt cybercrime by leveraging insights from recaptured darknet data
